However, explicit moral reasoning is also required when moral judgments must be explained to others. Stanley and colleagues examined whether subsequent reasoning would influence an individual's own moral judgments. These results suggest that moral decisions are resistant to revision because people engage in biased, motivated evaluation of the available reasons to affirm their initial affective reaction. ![]() These results held across moral dilemmas that were extreme and sacrificial (e.g., killing a crying baby to prevent detection by enemy soldiers) and commonplace (e.g., keeping incorrect extra change), and did not depend on whether the reasons presented were novel to participants or whether there was a longer delay (one day) between the initial and final decision. ![]() Overall, few participants changed their initial decision, and they rated reasons supporting their initial decision more highly than those supporting the alternative decision. Finally, they were again asked to make a decision on the same moral dilemma. Next, participants were presented with reasons affirming or opposing their original choice, or reasons for both options, and asked to rate how compelling each reason was. In their study, Stanley and colleagues (2018, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General) had participants make an initial decision in a moral dilemma. However, it remains unclear whether subsequent reasoning can lead people to change their initial decision. Moral judgments and decisions are often driven by automatic, affective responses, rather than explicit reasoning. For instance, one could argue that it is okay to kill one person if it would save five, because more people would be saved, but killing itself is immoral. Moral dilemmas are challenging because there are often good reasons for and against both choices. FreeCell XP will make you feel like you are back in time. The recent concept of a soil microbial C pump proposes that microorganisms metabolically process plant residues (i. e. As organic matter enters the soil, some C is lost to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide or methane from decomposition, whereas other C may be sequestered in the soil by stabilization processes. Although aboveground plant litter has been considered the main origin of stable organic matter in the past, more recent studies suggest plant roots and fungal necromass as major contributors to the stable organic matter pool. Over the past decades, scientists have argued about the main drivers of C sequestration (i. e. The mechanisms controlling the stability of C and N in belowground organic matter are still not entirely identified, thus limiting the current understanding of the global C cycle in a future climate. 3 However, global warming may increase SOM turnover rate, because an increase in temperature will enhance enzymatic activities responsible for decomposition, thereby shifting C sinks to sources and accelerating climate change. In this Minireview, we focus on boreal forest ecosystems which store significant amounts of the global C pool, mostly belowground in SOM. 2 Terrestrial carbon (C) and nutrient cycling is tightly linked with soil organic matter (SOM) as the key driver of both cycles. 1 As a consequence, humankind needs to mitigate climate change via sequestering more C and N into slowly cycling pools and retaining C in sinks. carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide), that enhance global warming. Anthropogenic activities, such as the use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers and the combustion of fossil fuels, accelerate C and nutrient cycles via increased land‐based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (e. g. This option was convenient & relaxing that you could stay in your seat & be served. ![]() The Clipper crew came to your seat and took your order & served you food & drinks if you ordered from their on-board cafe, just like on an airplane. We also really liked the great service found on the Victoria Clipper. Since we were on a trip kid-free, we enjoyed sitting in the airline seating section so we could enjoy some quiet time to read as we traveled through the islands on our way to Victoria. The bottom floor was a combination of the table seating along with more airline style seating in the front half of the boat (but with a bit more legroom than a typical airline seat). It was a beautiful view as we left Victoria to be able to see the Inner Harbour and all the buildings from the back of the boat. On the 2nd floor, there was also a deck where you could go outside to get some pictures or just enjoy cruising through the Puget Sound and Straits of Juan de Fuca. With these tables, if the boat was really full, just know that they do need to fill in all the spots, so if there is room at the table, then other people may be sitting with you (like on a train), but it would be a fun way to pass the time chatting with others. I think the tables would definitely make great options for families to be able to have some more space & get out coloring books, a few toys, etc. The top floor also has some nice views from that 2nd level. The Clipper has 2 floors on the catamaran boat – the top floor is filled with tables which would be great for families. There are either 4 or 6 seats grouped together around a table, which would make it nice for eating, playing games and more. Even though we only spent one night, we felt like this schedule really made it feel like 2 full days in Victoria. We liked the times they traveled as it was 8am – 10:45am & then we departed the next day at 5pm to arrive at 7:45pm in Seattle. ![]() The trip to Victoria takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, going through the Puget Sound & Straits of Juan de Fuca. The Victoria Clipper is a passenger only ferry service that travels year-round to Victoria, as well as traveling to the San Juan Islands seasonally. Not only is the location convenient to board the boat, but the Clipper is a nice, comfortable way to make your way to Victoria. The Victoria Clipper is a great option for those in the Puget Sound area or if you’re coming up from Oregon or out of state as it takes off right out of Seattle on the waterfront. My husband and I recently headed up to Victoria and after considering all the options of travel to Victoria, we decided upon the Victoria Clipper. If you’re thinking of heading up to Victoria, BC, you’ll definitely want to consider traveling on the Victoria Clipper as it’s based right out of Seattle & is a very convenient option for heading up to Victoria. ![]() CSV export files from 's Connected Car Assistant device and smartphone app can now be converted or mapped with GPS Visualizer. The song is a favourite at sporting events, often being played to rally crowds. ![]() One of the most memorable performances of the song took place in Stockholm, Sweden on 31 December 1999, as part of the Millennium celebrations, as it was the first, and to date only, Europe performance with both of the band’s lead guitarists, the original guitarist John Norum and his replacement, Kee Marcello. The song has been a regular in Europe concerts ever since its live debut on the premiere of their Final Countdown Tour in April 1986. The music video, directed by Nick Morris, contains footage from two concerts the band did at Solnahallen in Solna, Sweden on 26 and, as well as some extra footage filmed at the sound checks for those concerts. The song is also the band’s highest charting single in Australia and Canada, peaking at number 2 and number 5 respectively. The single reached number 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and is the most successful song from the album on the Album Rock Tracks chart, peaking at number 18 (and charting for 20 weeks). “ The Final Countdown” became an instant success on the charts worldwide upon its release, reaching number one in 25 countries (including the UK, where it spent two weeks at the top and is Europe’s only Top 10 hit to date), and is commonly regarded as the band’s most popular and recognizable song. That was a statement on that and it sort of worked out nicely.” I wanted to make a combination of guitars and keyboards. In 2009, Tempest told the BBC’s Liam Allen, “I can trace bands like UFO in it, sort of a galloping theme like Iron Maiden had on The Number of the Beast album on quite a few songs. Nowadays, we don’t rehearse it, but when we play it live, it is still just so amazing! It does communicate so well with the audience and we really love playing it. So, I had that ‘riff’ tucked away in a drawer since my college years and I took it out, found a tempo for it, wrote lyrics, and it turned out to be a great opening for that album and for the show, as well. We were putting out our third album and we wanted a really ‘grand’ opening for the show. It was meant to be an opening for the ‘live’ show. It was over six minutes long and was never meant to be a hit or anything like that. The ironic thing, though, is that the song was actually written for the fans. Apparently it has been used a lot and it was nice to hear. ![]() Sometimes you hear it on the streets or someone has it on their mobile phone or something… it’s a nice feeling! Actually, I did an interview about a year ago with a newspaper from America and they talked about how much it’s been used in sports in America… which I didn’t know so much about. But in the end I fought hard to make sure it got used.” Tempest described their uncertainty: “ Some of the guys in the band thought it was too different for a rock band. ![]() At first, the members expressed mixed reactions to it, including guitarist John Norum who was put off by the synth intro but said that he was glad they didn’t listen to him. Tempest recorded a demo version of the song and played it for the other band members. In 1985, bassist John Levén suggested that Tempest should write a song based on that riff. The song was based on a keyboard riff which Joey Tempest had written, as early as 1981 or 1982, on a Korg Polysix keyboard which he had borrowed from keyboardist Mic Michaeli. A music video by Nick Morris was made to promote the single that features footage from the band’s two concerts at the Solnahallen in Solna, as well as extra footage of the sound checks at those concerts. In the United States, the song peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 18 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. The song reached number one in 25 countries, including the United Kingdom, and was certified gold in that country in 1986. Originally made to just be a concert opener, it is the first single and title track from the band’s third studio album. Written by Joey Tempest, it was based on a keyboard riff he made in the early 1980s, with lyrics inspired by David Bowie‘s “ Space Oddity“. “ The Final Countdown” is a song by Swedish rock band Europe, released in 1986.
